Understanding Non-Toxic Cleaning ProductsUnderstanding Non-Toxic Cleaning Products

In recent years, the demand for eco-friendly cleaning products has been on the rise as more and more people become aware of the importance of sustainable living. One term that often accompanies these products is "non-toxic." But what does non-toxic really mean? In this blog post, we will delve into the essence of non-toxicity and explore how it relates to eco-friendly cleaning products.

What does non-toxic mean?

Non-toxic refers to substances that are not harmful or poisonous to humans or the environment. When it comes to cleaning products, non-toxic formulations are designed to minimise or eliminate the use of chemicals that may have adverse effects on our health or the planet.

Why non-toxic products matter for the environment

So why does it matter so much? Here's what's really at stake when conventional cleaning products go down the drain.

Preservation of ecosystems and aquatic life

Toxic chemicals present in conventional cleaning products can have detrimental effects on ecosystems. When these products are washed down the drain, they find their way into rivers, lakes, and oceans, contaminating water sources and disrupting aquatic life. By using non-toxic cleaning products, we can reduce pollution and help preserve the delicate balance of ecosystems.

Many cleaning products contain chemicals that can be harmful to wildlife. For example, certain ingredients in conventional detergents and soaps can be toxic to fish and other aquatic organisms. By opting for non-toxic alternatives, we minimise the risk of contaminating habitats and safeguard the well-being of wildlife.

Reduction of indoor and outdoor air pollution

Reduction of Air Pollution: Traditional cleaning products often release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air, contributing to indoor and outdoor air pollution. VOCs can have adverse health effects and also contribute to the formation of smog. Non-toxic cleaning products, on the other hand, are formulated to minimise or eliminate the release of VOCs, helping improve air quality and reducing the negative impact on human health and the environment.

Protecting our water supply and soil

Sustainable Water Management: Toxic chemicals that enter water bodies through conventional cleaning products can pose a threat to our water supply. These chemicals can contaminate drinking water sources and make them unsafe for human consumption. By using non-toxic products, we can help protect water quality and promote sustainable water management practices.

Protecting our water supply and soil

Healthier Soil and Plants: When toxic chemicals leach into the soil, they can disrupt soil ecosystems and harm beneficial organisms such as earthworms and microorganisms. Additionally, these chemicals can accumulate in plants, affecting their growth and potentially entering the food chain. By choosing non-toxic cleaning products, we minimise the risk of soil and plant contamination, promoting healthier ecosystems and food production.

Long-term sustainability

Toxic chemicals have long-lasting effects on the environment, persisting in the ecosystem and potentially causing harm for years to come. By using non-toxic cleaning products, we contribute to a more sustainable future by reducing the accumulation of harmful substances in the environment.

The risks of conventional cleaning products - and why it's a topic we ignore

Traditional cleaning products often contain harsh chemicals such as ammonia, chlorine, and phthalates, which can have detrimental effects on our health and the environment. They may contribute to indoor air pollution, trigger allergies, or contaminate water sources when washed down the drain. This is a super huge topic that is often forgotten - they all go down the drain. And many cleaning products, including some eco ones, have the "harmful to aquatic life" warning right there on the back.

This was a non-negotiable for me when formulating Natrie's products — and it proved surprisingly hard to achieve. But we did.

It even meant we couldn't use essential oils for scent, as many are toxic to aquatic life and a trigger for many allergies. Each essential oil can contain up to 200 chemicals. They are a powerful medicine - but they were not designed to be used as a fragrance in products.

The benefits of non-toxic cleaning products in your home

In essence, non-toxic products contribute to making your home healthier. They are free from harmful chemicals, making them safer for use around children, pets, and individuals with sensitivities or allergies. They help create a healthier indoor environment by reducing exposure to toxins. VOCs - released by many traditional cleaning products — are a huge contributor to indoor pollution, allergies, and respiratory issues.

Non-toxic products are better for you, your home and for the planet. What's not to love?

How to make sure you're actually making non-toxic choices

Ingredients to Avoid:

To make informed choices, it's helpful to know which ingredients to steer clear of. Some common ones include phthalates, formaldehyde, triclosan, and SLS. Opt for products that disclose each one of their ingredients and prioritise natural, plant-based alternatives. Having said this, don’t assume that a plant based product is automatically non-toxic. Studies have shown that this isn’t the case, as there are products on the shelves claiming to be eco-friendly, using ingredients that are harmful to aquatic life. Eco-friendly shouldn’t only relate the the packaging, but in some cases it really does.

Always check the H warnings for things like “harmful to aquatic life”  and “very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects”.

DIY Non-Toxic Cleaning Solutions:

Making your own non-toxic cleaning solutions is an excellent way to control the ingredients and reduce waste. Simple ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice can be combined to create effective and environmentally friendly cleaning solutions.

Choose a brand that does the hard work for you - like Natrie

Opt for brands, like Natrie, which discloses all the ingredients, uses the minimum amount of ingredients to ensure the cleanest products, and has worked super hard to ensure we can safely call our products ‘non-toxic’.
